The Centre for Travel Writing Studies (CTWS) was established in 2002:
- To produce, facilitate, and promote scholarly research on travel writing and its contexts, without restriction of period, locus, or type of travel writing.
- To encourage and enable conversation between travel writers and academics with the aim of fostering a mutually informed scholarship and practice.
- To collaborate with organisations in the cultural sector (museums, galleries, libraries and archives) on the presentation, reinterpretation and publicising of their travel-related holdings.
- To foster communities of travel writers and travel readers in Nottingham and the wider Midlands region through the organisation and publicising of activities such as talks, workshops and readings in the locality.
